THE ORGANIZATION:The District of Columbia Forensic Nurse Examiners (DCFNE) is an independent nonprofitorganization dedicated to providing patient-centered forensic nursing care to people who have experienced sexual assault and domestic violence. DCFNEs mission is to lessen the impact ofviolence in the District of Columbia.POSITIONS PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide on-call and in-house shift coverage as scheduled Respond to MedStar Washington Hospital Center or any other DCFNE location within one(1) hour of activation Provide comprehensive medical forensic exams and consultations, including:o Head-to-toe medical assessment for traumao Detailed anogenital examinationo Use of adjunct techniques such as toluidine blue dye and alternate light sourceo Forensic specimen collection and supportive documentationo Photo and written documentation of exam findings Collaborate with medical providers and advocates to create an individualized care plan based on the patients experience, needs, and preferences Advise and/or administer prophylactic medications and emergency contraception peragency protocols Assess for mandatory reporting status and report when appropriate Maintain chain of custody and adhere to evidence guidelines Ensure patient and medical record confidentiality at all times (HIPAA) Engage with patients through in-person, telephone, and/or telehealth modalities Maintain professional standards that do not create conflicts of interest with employment or patient care Testify as a fact witness to any/all cases performed while employed by DCFNE, even when no longer employed by DCFNE Engage in DCFNEs peer review process which includes reviewing medical forensic charts (as directed) and reviewing/acknowledging feedback provided Attend monthly staff meetings as scheduled; minimum 80% attendance required, annually Complete an employee review and skills competency validation, annually Maintain expertise as an FNE through continuing education, engagement with professional community, and review of current research and literature Other duties as assigned by DCFNE Leadership, including participation in communityawareness and education eventsREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Active Registered Nurse or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licensure in the District of Columbia Minimum 2 years of nursing experience Flexibility to work day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts Legal authorization to work in the United States Excellent attention to detail; excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to work independently/autonomously based on standing orders and protocols Ability to chart both by computer keyboard or tablet with accuracy and efficiency Ability to lift materials weighing up to 20 pounds Ability to travel in the Washington, DC metropolitan area by personal vehicle or publictransportation and respond to calls from dispatch within 1 hourPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of an International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN)-approved 40-hour Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) training* Experience working with crime victims and/or marginalized communities Proficient in Spanish or American Sign Language Comfort with technology and electronic medical records Ability to commit to the position for at least 18 months*Not required if being hired through the On-the-Job Training ModelSCHEDULE AND HOURS:The FNE position is a Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) non-exempt, at-will employment position and requires an in-person and remote work response. Hours may vary per staffing needs includes days, nights, weekends, and holidays dependent on shift availability. FNEs on-call shifts must be in increments of at least 4 hours, with an organization preference for a 12-hour on-call shift. Forensic Nurse Examiners are considered Essential Employees.Full-Time FNE Schedule:This is a full-time position with a minimum requirement of 36 on-call hours per week. During the initial onboarding period, additional hours may be necessary to complete orientation and training,which includes three in-person activities: two Skills Labs (16 hours total) and one Simulated Exam (6 hours). These hours are typically incorporated into the standard 36-hour work week. Full-time nurses receive scheduling priority, meaning they may select their preferred shifts before all other clinical staff.PRN FNE Schedule:This is a per diem position with a minimum requirement of 36 hours (PRN-36) or 60 hours (PRN- 60) of on-call time per 4-week scheduling block, following completion of orientation and the first 90-days of independent practice. During the initial onboarding period and 90-day period that follows,PRN FNEs are required to work 48 hours (PRN-36) or 60 hours (PRN-60) of clinical on-call time per 4- week scheduling block and attend three in-person activities: two Skills Labs (16 hours) and one Simulated Exam (6 hours). PRN-60 nurses receive scheduling priority over PRN-36.Additional Work Hour RequirementsBoth FT and PRN FNEs have prearranged, required work activities as part of or beyond the on-call shift requirement. While most activities should be conducted during an employees on-call shift, employees must be able to work the following hours on non-patient care assignments: Annual Competency: 2-4 hours required once per year (in addition to on-call shift hours) Annual Continuing Education (offerings may vary year-to-year):o Testimony Training: 8 hours once per year (in addition to on-call shift hours)o Virtual Conference: 10-12 hours once per year (to be completed during on-call shiftswith up to 6 hours allowed outside of on-call shift hours, if needed) Monthly Nonprofit Administrative Requirements: 1.5 hours per month, on average (to becompleted during on-call shift hours) Monthly Peer Reviews: 5 hours per month (to be completed during on-call shift hours) Monthly Staff Meetings plus Case/Photo Review: 2-3 hours per month (in addition to on-call shift hours) Other:o Optional Continuing Education: 12 hours per year (in addition to on-call shift hours)o Required Court Testimony: Varies by Court Ordero As assigned: DCFNE maintains the right to add additional required work activitieswithin reason and with advance noticePAY AND BENEFITS:The hourly rate for the FNE position starts at $45 per hour. After the orientation period, the hourly rate will increase to $47 per hour for PRN employees and $50 per hour for FT employees, plus Night Shift Differential for hours worked between 7p-7a ($5/hr). Holiday and Incentive Shifts are compensated at 1.5x the total hourly rate. Please note: DCFNE values sustainability in our workforce, and therefore this hourly pay rate applies to both on-call and worked hours. This position is paid bi-weekly.
